Southern Regional College, in association with the Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade, hosted the Big Apprenticeship event on Wednesday 26 April at its Newry Campus.
The event highlighted and promoted the range of new higher level apprenticeship options available to A’ Level school leavers. It also provided information on the huge range of apprenticeship options on offer for those students completing their GCSEs this year.
Many leading local employers were also in attendance and have committed to creating hundreds of new apprenticeship and higher level apprenticeship job opportunities in a wide range of areas. Students leaving school in June 2017 were invited with their parents/guardians to attend this information and employer showcase evening to find out more about these ‘local’ apprenticeship opportunities starting from September 2017. This event highlighted to parents and young people that they should ‘Think Differently’ and consider more cost effective, alternative routes to achieving degree qualifications whilst working locally.
Raymond Sloan, Director of Client Services at Southern Regional College said:
‘We were delighted to work with Newry Chamber of Trade and Commerce in hosting in this event with the aim of challenging local school leavers and their parents to ‘Think Differently’ about their next step options after leaving school. This event showcased the tremendous range of apprenticeship opportunities that exist locally for school leavers and how the new system of apprenticeships provides real jobs for young people right here on our doorstep.’
He went on to say;
‘It is important to be aware that university is not the only option to young people wishing to obtain higher level qualifications and skills. Young people can now ‘earn and learn’ obtaining degree level qualifications without incurring the level of debt associated with full time higher education. The message is simple – if you want to gain skills and enter the workforce without any debt, then an apprenticeship is for you.’
Employers speaking at the event included Norbrook Laboratories, MGM Group, PKF-FPM, CGDM and the Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade.
If you were unable to attend the event and are interested in exploring apprenticeship and higher level apprenticeship opportunities commencing in September 2017, please email: info@src.ac.uk or Tel: 0300 123 1223 to obtain further details.
