Co-operate for development

Newry and Mourne director of district development Gerard McGivern was among the speakers at last week’s ‘Models for Cross Border Co-operation’ event inn the Crown Plaza Dundalk. At the EU sponsored International Centre for Local and Regional Development Mr McGivern outlined how the local authorities of Louth and Newry and Mourne have cooperated for over 30 years and how the councils have arrived at a new form of local governance and accountability in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding which was signed in Brussels in March 2011. Gerard said the benefits of such cooperation are highlighted in the delivery of European funding for recent projects including £900,000 Carlingford Lough Regeneration programme and the 6.5M Euro Mussel Berthing facility developed by Warrenpoint Harbour Authority.
