Courting cruisers

The team behind to establish Warrenpoint as a regular port of call small-medium sized cruise liners will step up their efforts to secure bookings this September. Samuel Stewart & Co who are based in Warrenpoint’s Harbour Estate recently confirmed that they had attracted the Saga Pearl II vessel to south Down on July 20 2014. Following in from this coup the company confirmed that they had hoped to secure further bookings ahead of the luxury vessel’s arrival into Carlingford Lough. It has since been confirmed that representatives from the firm will attend a major cruise ship conference in Hambourg from September 24-26 where they will meet with a number of companies in a bid to secure bookings for 2015. A Council official is also expected to attend the event in an effort to help develop Warrenpoint as destination for cruise liners. In addition to trying to attract further cruises, the Council is also hoping to put the district’s best face forward for the July 2014 visit and as such are developing a suitable programme of events for incoming visitors. The local authority is also hoping to attract non-cruisers to the town on the day the vessel docks and will carry out a promotional exercise ahead of this. The Technical/ Leisure Services Department will also dedicate additional resources to a street cleaning to Warrenpoint at the time of the visit.
