More than 50 per cent of people living in Newry and Mourne hold a Credit Union account according to latest government figures. Minister of Enterprise Trade and Investment Arlene Foster confirmed that as of September 30 2013 there were 580,222 Credit Union members in Northern Ireland. A further breakdown of these figures reveals that there are 50,671 members of Credits Unions based in Newry and Mourne. The 2011 census revealed that the population of the district was 99,48. This means that roughly 50 per cent of the District currently holds an account in any one of 8 Credit Unions.
