In an interview with the Newry Reporter new Health Minister Jim Wells has said that he believes Daisy Hill Hospital is suffering at the expense of Craigavon – and that he wants to build a new modern facility in the city. “One of the things I want to talk to (Southern Trust Chief Executive) Mairead McAlinden this one hospital, two sites model and is Daisy Hill suffering as a result of this change and is far too much going to Criagavon ?” he said. “Daisy Hill needs flattened and we need a new state of the art hospital for Newry.” In disc using such matters, the long serving south Down MLA also draws reference to cross-border health care provision, budgetary constraints, Newry’s new health hub project and how health care provision in the new Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will function under two Health Trusts.
