The former Ross Thompson/McCombs’s yard site which lies behind the Town Hall and Hollywood Arts Centre could become a ‘Pop up enterprise and community space’ if latest council plans are to be developed. The site was initially earmarked for a £6.5m development featuring retail restaurant and residential accommodation – however the plan came crashing down as a result of the collapse of the property market leaving the site vacant thereafter. Numerous proposals that have been put forward in the interim with the latest being a ‘sustainable proposal which would not prevent the Council from using the site in a number of years if required.” In terms of further developing the proposal Newry and Mourne Council has granted permission to Capital Quayside Community Trust to submit an application to the Landfill Fund in an attempt to attract finances for such a project.
