The Local Government Act (NI) 2014 sets out a General Duty of Improvement for local government, whereby all District Councils must put in place arrangements to secure continuous improvement in the exercise of their functions. As part of this duty, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is required to:
- Develop performance improvement objectives for the services it provides, which focus on enhancing the sustainable quality of life and environment for local communities and ratepayers
- Produce an annual Assessment of Performance to demonstrate whether planned improvements have been achieved
The booklet below summarises some of the Council’s performance highlights during 2016-17 and provides an overview of the performance improvement objectives 2017-18.

As part of the process for developing the performance improvement objectives 2017-18, the Council consulted and engaged many key stakeholders, including citizens, partner organisations and local businesses. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for participating in the consultation process and putting forward your views. Your feedback has been instrumental in helping us to shape our performance improvement objectives, supporting actions and measures of success for 2017-18. The Council is committed to monitoring the implementation of its performance improvement objectives, with progress being reported through the annual Assessment of Performance.
