Newry Chamber Address Key Infrastructural Issues

A delegation from Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade, NEWRY BID and Retail NI met with the Department for Infrastructure Permanent Secretary Peter May and Senior Officials on Thursday 3rd May.

Speaking after the meeting, Mary Meehan, CEO of Newry Chamber said:

“The Collective engagement was a positive step forward and hopefully it paves the way for more structured ongoing engagement. The situation regarding parking enforcement in Newry is now reaching a point where something urgently needs to be done to ensure the future success of our city and to ‘Brand Newry’.

At the meeting we also strongly opposed any moves toward increasing on street car charges and called for the development of a joined-up strategy which works best for Newry.”

Mary also commented: “At the meeting, I took the opportunity to congratulate the Department on their work to date on progressing the Southern Relief Road. I also reflected our support for the Translink strategy to add additional frequency to the Belfast to Dublin Enterprise service as it will generate a significant economic benefit for the City of Newry and the surrounding region and improve its attractiveness to FDI.”

Also speaking on the issue of Transport, Mary commented: “The construction of the Belfast Transport Hub is important for the Newry region as it will facilitate greater capacity for both bus and rail links to Newry and generate economic benefits for the Belfast to Dublin corridor.”
