Newry Chamber President Welcomes Restoration of NI Executive

Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade has welcomed the restoration of the NI Executive and urged all parties in Government here to work together for everyone in Northern Ireland.

Edwina Flynn, President of Newry Chamber said:

“The NI Assembly and the Executive is now back up and running after a two-year absence. During that time, businesses across the Greater Newry Area have faced very difficult trading conditions with the cost of doing business and the cost-of-living crisis biting hard.”

“We need confidence restored through measures that support businesses and we need to see meaningful investment in infrastructure and public services so that Newry can fulfil its true potential as a city and take full advantage of its strategic position as the gateway to both the UK & EU markets.”

“Our businesses are ready to respond and now need to see leadership from the Executive with a Programme for Government that supports growth and encourages businesses to develop and create jobs and seizes the opportunities that Northern Ireland’s unique position with access to both markets now presents.”

“It is great that we have a local MLA as Economy Minister and we wish Conor Murphy every success in his new role. He understands the challenges we face in Newry and we will continue to lobby him and other Ministers on the need to support economic development across the Greater Newry Area.”

“This will require joined-up thinking and a realisation that regeneration and economic growth can only come through all Departments pulling on all the levers available to them to support investment. We need the infrastructure deficit across our city addressed and quickly so that investors can invest and businesses can continue to trade with confidence.”

“It is now time for delivery and working together for the common good and Newry Chamber will play its part in working to promote the Greater Newry Area as a happy, healthy place to live, work, study, shop, visit and invest.”
