An Environmental Improvement Scheme is programmed to start in Newry (ie. Along the western banks of Newry Canal from Dublin Bridge to Sugar Island Bridge) in April/May 2013 and run until early 2014. The works will comprise the replacement of the existing canal boundary wall with a new decorative maritime railing and the removal of car parking spaces on the canal side to facilitate of a new wider granite paved/kerbed pathway. New decorative street lighting, street furniture, tree planning and public art is also proposed as part of the scheme. The proposals can be viewed in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre from Wednesday 28th November until Wednesday 12th December 2012. Comments sheets will be available for you to have your say. Proposals can also be viewed and commented on through the Council’s website of www.newryandmourne.gov.uk Consultants will be available on Wednesday 5th December in the Newry Townhall Boardroom from 4pm-8pm should you wish to discuss the proposals with them in more detail. In particular the Department for Social Development (DSD) and the council would encourage traders to come along and view the proposals and feed your views into the process. While your input into the design is important, the Council and DSD funder is aware of the need to further consult with traders in due course on the phasing of the scheme implementation. Traders will have an opportunity to discuss in detail with the contractor when appointed, the phasing of works at a further drop in event.
