Parking ‘Quay’ to scheme

Businesses in the vicinity of Merchants Quay are currently being asked for their views on proposals for a £1.5m regeneration scheme planned for early 2013. The DSD funded Newry City Centre Linkages scheme will focus in the canal side area from Dublin Bridge to Sugar Island Bridge and aims to:

  1. Improve the aesthetic appearance of public space along the banks/ pathway of the canal in Newry city centre.
  2. Decrease the number of vacant properties along Merchant’s Quay.
  3. Increase pedestrian footfall along the entire canal-side area.

According to the survey the project hopes to: “Increase trade, improve appearances, entice tourists and other visitors and shoppers and to improve safety.” The Reporter understands the scheme would see the widening of walkways along the canal, something that would lead to the loss of some 120 parking spaces in the area. A number of businesses are understood to be concerned in relation to this element of the project with some already calling for the development of a multi-story facility in the area
