Congratulations to Paul Sheppard, Group Timber Manager at Murdock Builders Merchants who was named Achiever of the Year at the UK Builders’ Merchants Awards in the prestigious London Hilton on Park Lane on Friday evening.
Paul was acknowledged for his part in steering the Timber Division of Murdock Builders Merchants through the highs and lows of the past eighteen months.
It all started on the 12th May 2017 when the fire alarm sounded. Thinking that it was a routine fire drill, the staff safely evacuated the building only to find thick black smoke rising above the roofline. It transpired that one of the most critical arms of the business, the Timber Mill was already fully ablaze.
In the weeks and months that followed, Paul assumed a leading role in sourcing a replacement whilst keeping the branches adequately supplied with timber while trying not to over-promise and under-deliver.
As a direct result of the fire, £2m was invested by Murdock Builders Merchants in a brand new replacement plant alongside an additional £1m in the truss division that had been committed to prior to the fire.
Paul had to manage the installation of this huge new plant alongside what he was already doing as a result of the fire which was a job in itself. The management of the whole process was a team effort but Paul undoubtedly shone through as the man at the centre of everything.
