Public realm progress

Public realm schemes in Newry and Warrenpoint valued at some £3.4m continue to progress against onsite works later this year. Recent council reports reveal that a successful contractor for the £1m scheme that will transform Warrenpoint’s Church Street will soon be appointed. In Newry where a £2.4m scheme will take place on waterways adjacent to the canal, liaison meetings with key angling and waterways stakeholders will take place while advanced procurement of materials will progress in line with spend targets ahead of the end of the financial year. In related news the council has agreed to proceed to the commissioning of artists in order to take forward three public art competitions for the installation of public art as part of the proposed Newry Public Ream Scheme. Also council officials will investigate the use of Marcus Square Events Space – which was created last year’s Hill Street/ Monaghan Street public realm scheme – at weekends by local arts groups, musicians etc.
