Rostrevor makes the big stage

Rostrevor has made it to the red carpet of this year’s Oscars after the motion picture Philomena was nominated for four Academy Awards. The film which stars Steve Coogan and Dame Judy Dench is up for the awards of Best Motion Picture, Best Performance by an Actress. Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures and Best Writing Adapted for Screenplay. After its release in November 2012 Philomena has received rave reviews and was also nominated for four BAFTA Awards and four British Independent Film Awards while winning the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival. Based on a true story the film looks at the life of Philomena Lee who spends fifty years of her life searching in vain for her son after he was whisked away by nuns after she fell pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952. Philomena was sent to the Convent of Roscrea to be looked after a ‘fallen woman.’ When her baby was only a toddler he was sent to America for adoption. After 50 years of searching she met Martin Sixsmith a world weary journalist. Together they set of to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son but also the powerful bond that grew between Philomena and Martin – a surprising relationship that was both moving and very funny. The film is a bitter sweet comedy, a compelling narrative of human love and loss and a heart breaking story that ultimately celebrates life. This year’s Oscars take place on Sunday March 2.
