Triathlon and other sporting events also planned

In addition to staging major concerts in the city Paul McCann also plans to develop Newry’s sporting offering – with a major triathlon planned for September. “We are working on staging a City Triathlon on the Sunday of the weekend of City Day in September,” said Paul – a former chairman of Newry Triathlon Club. “This will see a pontoon placed on the canal before a sprint (swim) up the Basin for the transition. This means that spectators on the Quayside will be able to turn and watch the transition onto the bikes on the Omeath Road. The 12 mile bike course has not been finalised but it will be around the city and Bessbrook. Then we will have a 5km run which we hope will be up and down the streets in the city centre.” For those concerned about the cleanliness of the water in the canal for swimming, Paul insists that regular testing has proven it to be of a high standard. “We’ve been monitoring the water quality over the past year and it has been A1 – on a par with Camlough Lake.
