Margaret Ritchie MP for South Down has welcomed a Failte Ireland report which she claims strengthens her case for a similar reduction on VAT on tourism in the North. The SDLP’s Ms Ritchie has been a consistent lobbyist for a reduction in VAT on tourism which she believes would bring great benefits for tourism in the North and raised the matter with the UK Chancellor at a recent meeting. “I welcome this report because it clearly demonstrates the benefits to the economy in the south of Ireland and shows quite clearly what opportunities are available for tourism establishments and attractions including hotel accommodation in the north of Ireland,” said Ritchie. “As an MP representing a border constituency where tourism is a principle driver of the local economy, I want to see more people visiting and investing their money in the local area – at attractions and hotels. To reduce VAT to nine per cent in the North would bring enormous benefits to the region and I will be making the case for that to happen on my return to Westminster and again with the Chancellor,” she added.
