Wind farm on agenda

Steps need to be taken to allay the concerns of residents living in the vicinity of the proposed Tullyneill Windfarm in south Armagh according to councillor Barra O Muiri. The matter went before last Tuesday’s Council planning committee has been of much concern in the Newtownhamilton area with Cllr O Muiri putting across his party’s view on the matter. “Sinn Fein supports the use and development of renewable sources of energy as long as there is no detrimental impact on people living in the vicinity of any proposed project,” he said. “I have been speaking to people on the ground and there are serious fears which have not to date been addressed. People are understandably concerned about any potential flicker from the windmills and the health impacts this would have. Predictably noise pollution and future planning restrictions are also issues that people have raised with me and which I feel have not yet been fully addressed. These issues coupled with unconfirmed reports that people living within a 5K radius of the development are to receive a financial package and statements from Gaeletric that it will establish a £225k community fund should the project go ahead have made people very wary of the scheme.
