It has been a busy period for the Chamber and last week, we were delighted to officially launch the 2025 Greater Newry Business Awards.

This year marks the 10th edition of these prestigious biennial awards which recognise, celebrate and reward the success of local businesses and individuals at the top of their game so I encourage you to start preparing your entries and get them in before the deadline of Friday 11th July HERE.

Our Annual Golf Classic at Cloverhill Golf Club will take place this week on Friday which is always a great day and you can still book a team or sponsor a hole HERE.

I also encourage you to register for a FREE Cyber Security Seminar facilitated by our member, LoughTec next week on Tuesday 20th May in the Canal Court Hotel.

The event is designed to educate participants on the current landscape of cyber threats and types of increasingly prevalent attacks which you can register to attend HERE.

We were delighted to host our first major eCommerce event, which focused on the theme of ‘eCommerce as a Driver of Newry’s Economy’ on Wednesday 9th April in the Canal Court Hotel which was attended by 100+ delegates from local businesses and you can now watch the videos and view the slides from the event HERE.

Following on from this event, we will host our ‘NI Digital Marketing Conference’ on Thursday 12th June in the Canal Court which is FREE to attend. The full conference programme will be announced in the coming weeks but you can now register to attend this event HERE.

NEWRY CHAMBER HOSTS POSITIVE ENGAGEMENT EVENT
WITH INFRASTRUCTURE & ECONOMY MINISTERS

Greater Newry can capitalise on the huge opportunities for economic growth in the coming years if the significant challenges can be overcome by a partnership approach with local Ministers.

That was the message that resonated from a positive engagement with Infrastructure & Economy Ministers at a Chamber Corporate Patrons Event at Killeavy Castle on Thursday 8th May, kindly sponsored by Power NI.

The event provided the opportunity for the Chamber’s 40+ Corporate Patrons, which includes many of the leading employers across the Greater Newry Area, to hear from Infrastructure Minister, Liz Kimmins MLA and Economy Minister, Caoimhe Archibald MLA to discuss the economic and infrastructure challenges facing local businesses and explore opportunities available through Dual market access, cross-border trade and innovation.

The event focused on the theme of ‘Developing Greater Newry into a Sustainable City, Region and Economy for the 21st Century’ and covered a broad spectrum of issues including:

NEWRY CHAMBER HIGHLIGHTS POTENTIAL FOR NEWRY
TO BECOME ECOMMERCE HUB ON ISLAND OF IRELAND

Newry Chamber shone a spotlight on the potential for Newry City to become an eCommerce Hub on the island of Ireland at a half day event in the Canal Court Hotel on Wednesday 9th April, kindly supported by Kukoon Rugs, tomorrow.ie and SJ Henderson Fulfilment.

Over 100 delegates from local businesses of all shapes and sizes heard from an expert line-up of speakers in a packed event programme which included a mix of presentations, fireside chats and a panel discussion.

Paul Walsh, Founder of tomorrow.ie delivered a superb presentation, breaking down the eCommerce activity in Newry and how local businesses can get a slice of the pie. Maeve Finnegan, Managing Director of Mitso also delivered an fantastic presentation on the area of B2B Commerce and how this can help local businesses open a world of new possibilities.

Clare Vallely, Managing Director of Kukoon discussed the path taken over the last 20 years to build a global brand from scratch in Newry. Laura Kearney, Founder & CEO of The Walk in Wardrobe discussed her journey from humble beginnings on the high street in Banbridge to shipping hundreds of thousands of online orders internationally through her eCommerce platform.

Those in the room also heard from a panel of experts on what it takes to run a successful eCommerce operation, with the panel discussion including Stephen Henderson from SJ Henderson Fulfilment, Derek McDonald from BT and Siobhan Walsh from Scatter Box.
