Newry Chamber Joins Dundalk & Drogheda Counterparts to Promote the M1 Corridor to Louth County Council

Michael Savage, CEO of Newry Chamber addressed the monthly council meeting of Louth County Council on Monday 18th May along with representatives of Dundalk and Drogheda Chambers to promote collaboration on the M1 Corridor.

During the hour-long meeting, he outlined Newry Chamber’s ambitions for the Greater Newry Area as a vibrant city at the heart of a cross-border hinterland that can become an economic powerhouse on the M1 Corridor within the Dublin-Belfast Economic Corridor (DBEC).

Michael also outlined how ongoing collaboration and partnership with Dundalk Chamber around a Shared Waterways Funding Model to deal with wastewater capacity challenges in the Greater Newry and Greater Dundalk cross-border region has made progress with engagement ongoing with NI Water, Uisce Éireann, SEUPB and the Shared Island Unit.

Michael Savage, CEO of Newry Chamber said:

“I would like to thank Cllr. Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council and David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council for allowing all three Chambers the opportunity to advocate the merits of the M1 Corridor and how we can all work together to ensure the Newry, Dundalk and Drogheda all fulfil their economic potential and build a cross-border economic powerhouse on the Eastern Seaboard of Ireland.”

“Meeting wastewater and other infrastructure needs are the key challenges all three areas along the M1 Corridor face and if we can collaborate to find funding mechanisms that meet those challenges then we have the capacity to develop the huge potential of our local economies, protect our shared waterways and natural environment and deal with one of the biggest challenges we face on the island of Ireland, namely housing need.”

“The M1 Corridor sits within the DBEC and complements it and adds value due to the level of ongoing cooperation between the three Chambers which resulted in a joint submission to the Irish Government’s National Development Plan earlier this year.”

“Collaboration is key to all our futures on this island and I would like to thank our partners, Paddy Malone and John McGahon of Dundalk Chamber and Hubert Murphy of Drogheda Chamber for all their work in making this joint, warmly received presentation to Louth County Council possible.”
