Plans to deliver a cycle and walking path from Newry to Dundlak via the Cooley Peninsula look set to take a step forward in 2014 as Newry and Mourne District Council begin searching for funding for its share of the project. Already Louth Co Council has taken significant steps towards developing a 2.5km Greenway from Omeath to Greer’s Quay but it appears that plans are being put in place to deliver the Northern Element of the cross border project. The Reporter understands that delivering a path from the Albert Basin to Victoria Lock via the Middlebank would cost something in the region of £500k with Newry and Mourne Council hoping to draw down grant aid of £140k from NIEA. The Council in addition to making some funding provision in the 2014/2015 rate estimates is also likely to seek funding from the Department of Regional Development. In the meantime temporary grounds maintenance staff continue clearing some 2.2km land along the Middlebank. According to Council reports the area is currently home to ‘heavy vegetation and overgrowth’.
