Local man Daniel Donegan who works for Teleperformance in Newry won a competition launched bay the Quays Shopping Centre in early January. The competition was “Walk to Work” sponsored by Sports Direct as part of an award winning Workplace Travel Plan Initiative, which promotes sustainable travel options to employees who work at the Quays site. Daniel won by simply explaining how walking formed part of his commute to and from work. Colleen Savage, The Quays Travel Plan Coordinator and Gavin Christy, Manager of Sports Direct, recently presented Daniel with a hamper of sports goodies which was also sponsored by Sports Direct. Accepting the hamper Daniel said: “I am absolutely delighted to win all this sports gear. I’d like to thank Sports Direct and the Quays for organising a really worthwhile competition. Every day I walk 2.5 miles to work and 2.5 miles home. It’s great exercise and I save money on transport costs. The air clears my head and sets me up for the day ahead.” Colleen Savage The Quays Travel Plan Coordinator added: ” I’d like to congratulate Daniel and thank everyone who entered the competition. I’d like to thank Sports Direct for their support and generosity in sponsoring such a wonderful prize. As part of this ‘Walk to Work’ promotion we also distributed safety reflective wristbands to those who regularly walk to work at the site. The Travel Plan initiative aims to provide employees at the Quays site with the information they need to have greater choice and access to sustainable travel alternatives. We want to encourage employees to consider walking, cycling, car sharing and using public transport to commute to work.” The Quays “Walk to Work” competition is part of a wider promotion of sustainable travel, which encourages employees to think about ‘a smarter way to work.’
