‘We help our members grow through a variety of networking opportunities.’

AUGUST NEWSLETTER

As you may be aware, Tony McKeown has stepped away from his role as CEO of Newry Chamber to pursue other interests. Tony has been in the position of CEO for two years and he has made a valuable contribution to the organisation.

Tony’s passion for Newry and the local area is infectious and I have no doubt that he will continue to be involved in the local business community. The Board, Council, Members and Management of the Chamber wish Tony well in his future endeavours.

Tony has now left his role and the Board of Directors has put interim measures in place in the short-term. The former CEO, Colm Shannon is providing support to the Board of Directors until a new CEO is appointed at the end of the recruitment process which is currently ongoing.

Newry Chamber is a proud and strong organisation with a 200-year history. We have a full programme of events from Sept – Dec with the NI SME Business Conference, the President’s Banquet and the Chamber AGM amongst other activity, which we look forward to.

DAISY HILL FUTURE GROUP MEET WITH PETER MAY,
PERMANENT SECRETARY AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Daisy Hill Future Group recently met with Peter May, Permanent Secretary at the Dept. of Health to discuss the Trust’s plans to stabilise the workforce and ensure continuity of services at Daisy Hill.

At the meeting, the Future Group’s representatives took the opportunity to reinforce their commitment to ensuring that services at Daisy Hill were not just stabilised but developed and enhanced. They sought and secured from Peter May an assurance that Daisy Hill would remain an integral part of the hospital network in NI.

Furthermore, Peter May and his senior advisors agreed with the Future Group’s analysis that a failure to resolve Daisy Hill’s current staffing difficulties would have a huge and detrimental impact on an already fragile healthcare system in NI.

The Future Group is clear, while recent announcements regarding the installation of an MRI scanner at Daisy Hill and the increase in planned (elective) surgeries are very welcome demonstrations of the Dept. of Health’s and Southern Trust’s commitment to develop services on the site, significant work remains to be done.

In particular, ensuring the 24/7 Emergency Department at Daisy Hill continues to have access to the specialist medical support that it requires to continue to provide high-quality emergency care.

The Future Group will continue to meet with the Trust and Permanent Secretary to lobby for the resources needed for Daisy Hill and to get the assurances that staff and the public need that Daisy Hill will survive and thrive as an important part of NI’s hospital network.

Newry Chamber are proud to be involved in this group with Chamber Board Member, Conor Patterson as Chair.
