CHAMBER WELCOMES TAOISEACH, MICHEÁL MARTIN TO NEWRY

The Chamber were delighted to welcome Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD to Newry on Fri 18th Nov 2022.

The roundtable discussion with local business leaders coincided with the Taoiseach announcing that the Narrow Water Bridge Project will be put out to tender.

Planning permission has already been secured for the 280m cable-stayed bridge which will link the Co. Down Coast and the Cooley Peninsula.

The project is being funded by the Shared Island Fund. It will improve connectivity and provide a huge boost to our tourism offering on both sides of Carlingford Lough.

The meeting was facilitated by the Chamber and kindly hosted by Norbrook Laboratories Ltd. It covered topics including economic development, skills, infrastructure, connectivity and healthcare provision.

CHAMBER MEETS WITH SECRETARY OF STATE FOR NI

The Chamber held a constructive roundtable discussion with Secretary of State for NI, Chris Heaton-Harris MP, on his first official visit to Newry.

The meeting took place at the offices of AbbeyAutoline on Wed 16th Nov 2022. It was attended by Chamber Board members and some leading local employers.

We stressed our desire for the Protocol issue to be resolved because of the political instability it has caused. We welcome the positive discussions now taking place between the UK and EU.

Hopefully, this will lead to a workable solution and will provide the basis for the restoration of the NI Executive.

Members also raised issues on corporation tax, rates, energy costs and infrastructure/city deal projects. We do hope to continue our constructive engagement with the Secretary of State in the future.
