NEWRY CATHEDRAL CORRIDOR PUBLIC REALM SCHEME (Phase 2 of Hill Street)

UP-TO MID-OCTOBER 2014

Newry City Centre Management and Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade are working in partnership with Newry & Mourne District Council and the Department of Social Development in regards to the above mentioned environmental improvement scheme.   Following a consultation held earlier this year regarding the approval of planning permission, efforts were fully geared towards the appointment of a contractor and granite supplier, so that all key requirements were in place for the scheme to start on-site in February 2015. As promoters of the public realm scheme we were also working closely with Transport NI (Traffic Management) and the PSNI on the proposed works sequence and terms the contractor must adhere to.

FROM MID-OCTOBER 2014 ONWARD

The scheme was to be funded under the regeneration powers due to transfer to local councils from the Department for Social Development under Local Government Reform in April 2015.  The DSD Minister has announced that these powers will not now be transferring to council until April 2016. As a result given the budgeting constraints facing the Northern Ireland Executive, DSD are not in a position to confirm the scheme to be supported in the financial year of 2015 / 2016 until their budgets has been agreed.  Newry & Mourne District Council have progressed the scheme to its current stage at risk, however given that there is some uncertainty surrounding the DSD budget allocation Council have decided to put any further progression on hold until budget clarification is received.

Newry City Centre Management will continue to work with Council and DSD to pursue the scheme as a matter of urgency and will issue further information on the delivery plans and timeframes etc once the position becomes clearer early in the New Year.

Regular updates will be notified on the Cathedral Quarter and Newry Chamber facebook pages.  Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me via email to: donna@newry.com

As we do not have the email addresses for each individual business within the boundary area it would be most appreciated if you could circulate details onto your neighbouring businesses.

Thank you for your co-operation.
