Newry Chamber hosted an information and Q&A session on Newry City Centre Regeneration with Senior Council Officials on Wednesday 31st July in Canal Court Hotel, Newry.
The event provided our members in attendance with an update on the current position of the regeneration projects and through an interactive Q&A, gave them opportunity to engage directly with the Senior Management Team at NMDDC including:
- Marie Ward, Chief Executive
- Conor Mallon, Director of Economy, Regeneration & Tourism
Edwina Flynn, President of Newry Chamber commented:
“Wednesday’s well-attended event provided Senior Council Management with an opportunity to provide an update on the progress of the Newry City Centre Regeneration Programme.”
“Chamber Members were given the opportunity to question the Council Chief Executive and Director of Economic Development on key issues of concern relating to specific schemes within the Programme.”
“Issues relating to the proposed Civic Centre, car parking provision, flood alleviation and the proposed costs of the Council schemes were amongst some of the issues raised by members and addressed by Senior Council Management.”
“The meeting provided an opportunity for clarity and reassurance from Council Officials on these and other issues and allowed for open discussion from the floor.”
“The issues of Rates and the need for infrastructure investment were also raised. Newry Chamber fully appreciates the increasing cost of doing business and the financial burden rates place on businesses within the Greater Newry Area.”
“This is a Central Government issue and Newry Chamber continues to lobby Central Government at Ministerial level to influence policy decisions around the future funding of public services and tackling the infrastructure deficit in this region.”
“The Newry Chamber Board will reflect on the views expressed and information provided at Wednesday’s meeting and will continue to engage with our businesses, Council and Central Government to ensure that economic growth and investment are central to the Regeneration of the Greater Newry Area.”
