‘We help our members grow through a variety of networking opportunities.’

Newry Chamber President’s Christmas Message 2024

As President of Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade, I would like to wish all our Members, Corporate Patrons, Sponsors, Partners, Suppliers, their families and their staff a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Reflecting on 2024

This year has been an incredible success for Newry Chamber. Our membership has grown to nearly 350 and we have delivered a packed calendar of events, seminars, forums, conferences and our annual awards night.

It’s hard to forget that this time last year, Greater Newry was grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding, which posed unprecedented challenges for many of our members and city centre traders. One year on, our businesses have demonstrated remarkable resilience and are hopefully enjoying a bustling festive trading season.

At the start of 2024, we unveiled our development strategy built on three core pillars:

(1) Growing the Chamber – Developing Newry Chamber into one of Northern Ireland’s largest and most active business organisations with an engaged membership base.

(2) Advocating for Infrastructure – Leading the call to address infrastructure deficits, unlocking development and investment potential in the Greater Newry Area.

(3) Tackling Recruitment & Skills Challenges – Uniting businesses, education and training providers to create a localised strategy addressing recruitment and skills shortages.

I am proud to say we have made significant progress in all these areas. Our lobbying efforts have been particularly impactful, addressing the issues that matter most to the businesses and people of Greater Newry.

Highlights of 2024

This year, we have welcomed ministers from key departments, including Economy, Finance, Infrastructure and Health. In October, I had the privilege of hosting the First and deputy First Ministers as keynote speakers at my President’s Banquet, and we engaged with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn MP, during our Recruitment and Skills Conference.

From robust lobbying on infrastructure and workforce challenges to collaborative events focused on economic and job creation solutions, we have ensured the Chamber remains at the heart of conversations that shape our region’s future.

In March, Chamber CEO, Michael Savage and I travelled to Washington to promote the Greater Newry Area. Building on this momentum, we plan further engagement with businesses and policymakers in Washington and Pittsburgh in 2025.

Community Focus

Newry Chamber continues to emphasise community support, partnering with local charities and social enterprises that provide vital services. I’m delighted that, during my first year as President, we raised over £10,000 for my chosen charities.

Looking ahead, I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating just one local cause for 2025, our fundraising efforts will focus on Women’s Aid Armagh Down as they work towards a much-needed purpose-built facility on the Downshire Road, Newry requiring £2 million in funding. I encourage all member businesses to consider joining us in supporting this crucial cause. Together, we can make a significant impact.

Looking Forward to 2025

As we reflect on a productive and successful year, I assure you that Newry Chamber will continue to champion your interests, foster networking opportunities and advocate for the entrepreneurial spirit that defines our city and district.

While challenges remain, we are committed to finding solutions. Better times are within reach and by working together, we can accelerate progress.

There is much to look forward to in 2025. Let’s seize the opportunities ahead, support each other, collaborate and continue to make the Greater Newry Area a thriving region for business and community alike.

Acknowledgements

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Chamber team, Michael, Jarlath and Andrea for their dedication, hard work and professionalism throughout the year. Your efforts have been instrumental in delivering our vision and ensuring the Chamber’s continued success.

I also extend my deep appreciation to our Chamber Board & Council Members for their guidance and unwavering support. Together, we make an exceptional team and I look forward to building on our accomplishments in 2025.
