More than 100 delegates have attended a conference on the Review of Public Administration, in the Canal Court Hotel. Environment Minister Alex Attwood was the keynote speaker at the event which also looked at the possible impact of planning being transferred from central government to local councils. Mr Attwood praised the commitment shown by building control departments in “embracing both the change and the opportunities that this presents for enhancing for enhancing the essential building control services that are provided by councils. I now intend to bring a comprehensive and integrated package of proposals to the Executive on all the key reform issues,” declared the minister. He said he would present his paper sooner rather than later and highlighted that this was “a once in a lifetime opportunity to reorganise councils.” During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding between the NI Fire and Rescuce Service and Building Control in Northern Ireland was signed by the chief fire officer and Dr Thresea Donaldson, chief executive Criagavon Borough Council.
