The process of appointing a new chief executive for the merged Newry Mourne and Down District Council has begun – with Monday December 9 the closing date for applications. As one of the largest of the new 11 council areas with an estimated population of around 170,000 people the post offers a remuneration package at the upper end of the scale – between £125k – £120k. Also offering the £105k – £120k salary is Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon whilst a new chief executive for Belfast City Council will be appointed through a separate process at a later date. The eight other smaller newly formed Councils will offer their incoming chief executives a salary between £95k – £110k. Thomas McCall the current chief executive of Newry and Mourne District Council whilst John Dumigan is the current chief executive of Down District Council. The recruitment exercise for the post is being ministered independently by the Local Government Staff Commission for Northern Ireland. Appointments to the newly created position will be made by the statutory Transition Committee made up of members of Newry and Newry and Mourne and Down District Councils. The reduction in the number of Councils is part of a process of called the Review of Public Administration.
