The number of vacant ground floor units on Hill Street and Monaghan Street has fallen by one in the last year – from 30 to 29. Ahead of last year’s public realm scheme on the city’s two main thoroughfares the Reporter carried out a door to door inspection to establish the health of our high streets – with 30 empty ground floor units being identified. A year on and although the economy has not improved substantially the appearance of our high street has – both as a result of the public realm scheme and the fact that one extra business is now trading. A breakdown of the two streets shows 18 empty units on Hill Street and 11 on Monaghan Street. In a statement Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade acting CEO Colleen Dowdall said the reduction slight as it may be was good news. “Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade welcome any reduction in empty shop units in the City Centre,” she said. “Newry City Centre is very much open for business. We support the revitalization scheme initiatives on Hill Street and Monaghan Street and this will be a great boost to the city centre.”
