Mourne Mountains Brewery has been garlanded with a prestigious craft brewery awards for its distinctive taste and character. The brewery won a silver medal at this year’s Alltech Dublin Craft Beer Cup ahead of over 150 other microbreweries in the North. In their fourth year the awards showcase the highest quality beers across the world with the best quality beers being decreed by a panel of expert judges on each brew on appearance, aroma, flavour, body style and quality.
Founder of Mourne Mountains Brewery Connaire McGreevy rejoiced at the recognition and said it would be an honour considering with the competitiveness in the field. He said: “As a micro brewer it is always satisfying to win any award for your beer. But for such an experienced panel top present our East Coast IPA worth a silver medal is a real honour especially when you consider how many other great beers were up for consideration.
“The award comes as a welcome boost to the microbrewery a business less than one year old”, said Mr McGreevy. “We are still only in our first year as a brewery so to receive this accolade already is a great boost and hopefully the first of many more to come. Credit has to go to our master brewer Tom Ray who has worked tirelessly to perfect the recipes for all our brews.”
Mr McGreevy also hailed the brewery’s gorgeous surroundings as a key facet of the brewing process and said: “A little bit of credit must also go to the Mourne Mountains themselves as all of the water that goes into our beers is taken straight from the Spelga Dam. It is beautifully soft and perfect for brewing making it one of the unique characteristics of our brewery and something we believe to be a key part of our success.”
The brewery produces a distinct range of craft beers, as well as East Coast IPA: including Red Trail, which is a red IPA; Mourne Gold, a golden ale; Big Rock, A German style wheat beer and Mourne Mist Pilsner, while they also produced a number of seasonal specials.
The Mourne Mountains supremo spoke of the business’s expansionist plans over the coming years and said: “Our beers are now stocked in more than 70 bars, restaurants and off licences across Northern Ireland and we are working hard to expand on this in the coming months. It is an exciting time and we and we have a lot in store for this year from limited edition brews to special events – so what this space!
Dr Gearoid Cahill Head Judge and Brewmaster with almost 20 years experience said: “The standard of craft brewing in Ireland and internationally is rising all the time. There is a great interest among brewers in achieving independent expert recognition for their beers. The Dublin Craft Cup and medals awarded to brewers are a fantastic accolade from independent, experienced beer judges and showcase the finest quality craft beers.
