Fiver Friday October 24th 2014

Fiver Friday is the brainchild of a caller to the Joe Duffy prime time afternoon show on RTE’s Liveline which gripped the nation. For one day only people can avail of a string of amazing discounts all over the country. This year the Fiver Friday initiative invites businesses throughout Northern Ireland to participate. Fiver Friday first aired in 2011 with predictions it would pump an additional €6.5 million into the economy but no one imagined it would take off as well as it did and accordingly the monitory prediction was far exceeded. Liveline has an average of 400,000+ listeners every day and goes out live at 1:45pm – 3pm Monday to Friday. Since last week the show has been promoting the build up to the Oct 24th and as it gets closer the host Joe Duffy calls a number of businesses live to discuss their promotion. Amazingly on the 24th he delicates his entire programme to Fiver Friday.

Last year businessman Des Mc Dermott from Crossmaglen took the initiative across the border to Northern Ireland featuring just 14 businesses which resulted in a resounding success with people flooding in to town to take advantage of the Fiver Friday £5 deals. Such was the success that Des now has built a website www.fiverfridayni.com where all businesses across Northern Ireland can have their promotion posted free of charge simply by emailing the details to fiverfridayni@gmail.com  The website will be promoted & linked to the Liveline programme and heavily marketed via all Social Media, Blogs etc.

Your fiver can get you an architect’s consultation, a full eye test or a wedding band for your big day – just a few of the deals that were offered nationwide. You can check out the website to view deals as they are posted each day

“Fiver Friday is a great and simple idea for neighbour to help neighbour and to support the local community,” Joe Duffy said.

“Fiver Friday is the one reason we need to boost the local economy and community.”

The man behind the idea of Fiver Friday is Mark Begg. He went on air with Joe Duffy to express his dismay at seeing small businesses like his struggling to keep up. Mark suggested a campaign to encourage the people ofIrelandto spend an extra €5/£5 to help give the businesses in their locality a boost.

So, it’s time to get out there and get spending. We’ve hand picked a few of previous years best Fiver Friday Specials on offer can you match them in 2014?
