Community groups and sporting bodies are being urged to apply for volunteering grants before the DSD project hits it deadline later this month. Small groups for volunteering funding have been made available through the Department of Social Development. South Down MLA Chris Hazzard is encouraging groups from across the district to get their applications in. “Community and sporting organizations are the cornerstone in south Down,” he said. “The work they carry out at a ground level is absolutely pivotal in curbing things like anti-social behavior and obesity and improving the general well-being in the areas in which they are active. It is therefore important that we support these groups in any way we can and the funding being made available by DSD is another way of doing just that. I would encourage all local societies, groups, clubs and other organizations that use volunteers to apply for this funding and avail ion full of this opportunity.” The funding is available to support community activity during the summer period that involves volunteers. Groups may apply for up to £1,000 to support volunteer expenses, running costs and equipment with 40 per cent of funding being allocated to groups working in disadvantaged areas. Application forms can be completed and submitted online at htpp://grants.volunteernow.co.uk If you are unable to complete an online application contact the DSD Finance Team on (028) 90232020
