Middlebank cycling

The ambition of creating a cycle greenway along the Middlebank is rapidly developing. According to the February report of Newry and Mourne Council’s Technical and Leisure Services director Jum McCorry, “Grounds Maintenance can confirm that all overgrowth and vegetation has been cut and cleared providing a walkway from both Middlebank and Victoria Lock to the mid points spillway section in order to allow inspection by possible funders and Councillors.” Delivery of a cycle lane along the route would effectively link the Omeath Carlingford  Greenway project (sections of which are currently under development) and the Newry Canal Towpath. This means that cyclists could soon travel the vast majority of the journey from Carlingford to Portadown off road. In further two-wheeled news the Council will send a ‘letter of comfort’ to the Planning Service in order to fast track a planning application for the  proposed national standard BMX track facility at Derrybeg.
