The Olympic Torch will visit Newry city on Tuesday June 5 and again Wednesday June 6. The visit to the district will include an evening celebration and civic event. The evening celebration will take place on Tuesday June 5 at Pairc Esler from 4pm-8pm followed by a civic event on Wednesday June 6 at Newry Town Hall from 1.00-2pm. Council officials have been liasing with all schools, community groups, sporting groups and the local business community within the community seeking their participation by turning out to welcome the torch for both events. Entry to Pairc Esler will be by ticket only from 4.00pm. Tickets for the event which are free are available through four outlets in Newry and Mourne including Newry Arts Centre, Warrenpoint Town Hall, Crossmaglen Community Centre and Kilkeel Leisure Centre. Traffic management arrangements have been put in place with diversions and parking restrictions being implemented by PSNI along the route at required locations. In particular there will be parking restrictions along Windsor Avenue, New Road and Abbey Way through to William Street junction and at the approach to Pairc Esler. Car parking arrangements have been put in place with free parking at Buttercrane car park all day and at the Quays car park from 4pm. Other city centre car parks will be operating as normal. The main entertainment at Pairc Esler will be General Fiasco supporting two 10 minute local content slots from Bernagh and Morgan School of Dance. Doors open at 4.00pm with the entertainment beginning at 5.30pm. The torch arrival will be at 6.50 pm. Beat on the street will be provided by Q Radio from 3.00 – 6.00pm at Newry Town Hall with Coca Cola sample handouts being distributed at three locations along the Olympic torch route.
