Newry’s Gaelaras Mhic Ardghail was officially opened by Mayor John McArdle on Monday February 18. Pol Mac Ardghail addressed the audience on behalf of the extended McArdle family and conveyed the family’s appreciation for the fine facility at ‘Mount St Patrick’ as a fitting tribute to the educational work of May, Tom and Una McArdle. Gerard Trainor, Chair of the Trustees, thanked all who attended and commended the voluntary work of his fellow Trustees Seoirse O Dufaigh, Seamus Mac Dhaibheid and Tomas Mac Ruairi, the Newry Branch teachers and the new team of volunteer helpers that is being developed at the at the Gaelaras. Gaeilgeoiri came from Dublin, Armagh, Belfast, Newcastle and Portadown to attend the event and were treated to musical entertainment provided by pupils of Bunscoil an Iuir led by their Principal Maria Caraher . Special Awards were made to Anita Gallagher who hasw just completed a very successful one year post as Heritage Development Officer (HLF) with Newry Branch Gaelic League and to Peadar O hEochaidh who received a Fianne Oir in recognition of fluency attained and his contribution to the Gaelaras Project.
