Shadow Secretary of State Vernon Croaker paid a visit to WIN Business Park in Newry this week. While there the Labour MP heard an explanation of the organisation’s evolution from Newry and Mourne Co-operative – a grassroots initiative born out of unprecedented unemployment in the area during the 1970s. Started by a small group of local business men with the aim of encouraging enterprise and creating jobs – to its current status as Newry and Mourne Enterprise Agency, which has maintained the original ethos while also adapting to changing circumstances throughout the years. Mr Croaker told invited guests including some of the Co-op’s co-founders that he found the model extremely impressive, describing its contribution to the community as “immense.”
