A local project aimed at helping businesses save money has scooped the top prize at a nationwide ‘Energy Environmental and Waste Management Awards’ ceremony. STEM (Sustainable Together through Environmental Management) who have been working alongside the Council for two years supporting local businesses make savings and implement environmental management systems won the ‘Leadership in Sustainable Development’ award at the Sustainable Ireland 2014 awards in Belfast. The project supported by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Cross Border Programme works with over 150 businesses to help them cut their energy waste and water bills to make them more competitive and reduce their environmental impact. Project Manager Anne Mason said: ” We are delighted to have gained the STEM Project this recognition in such a tough category. The STEM Project is an excellent demonstration of how European money can make a real difference not only to the businesses we have been helping but by encouraging them to operate in a more sustainable way to the wider community and environment also benefit.”
