The Quays Shopping Centre has teamed up with Yoga tutor Attracta Brown to bring yoga ‘taster’ sessions to The Quays. Attracta who is from Hilltown has more than 20 years’ experience in the private and voluntary sectors working with young people and adults.
With a studio set up in the Sports Lounge at the centre the programme will be kicking off with sessions for children to try out yoga using fun methods with toys and games. It is a proven fact that there are many benefits for children practicing Yoga including improving attention span, aiding memory, increasing creativity, as well as helping children to cope with everyday stresses and giving young people a better sense of body awareness to improve health and fitness levels.
The sessions will be completely free but must be booked in advance as places are limited. The first sessions will take place on Saturday 17th August for 5-8 year olds from 10am until 11am and 9-11 year olds from 11am until 12 noon. The children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
The second session will take place at the same time for the same age groups on Saturday 31st August, just in time to get children ready to go back to school.
Sherryl Murphy, Marketing and Events Manager at The Quays said, “We are delighted to have teamed up with Attracta who has a wealth of experience in not only teaching Yoga but in Counselling and many other aspects for improving health and wellbeing. We are introducing Yoga for children over the summer with a really emphasis on the fun side of improving your health and wellbeing. We hope in September to look at other groups and plan to introduce a parent and toddler Yoga session as well as looking at other possible groups. The Sports Lounge has been an extremely popular spot over the summer showing the biggest sporting events of the season and it is fantastic to see it now being used to show customers how they can make changes and improvements to their general wellbeing. I would just like to remind parents to sign their children up in advance and we will have facilities in the Sports Lounge for parents to wait during the class.”
Attractra Brown added, “I have been teaching and practicing Yoga for many years in conjunction with the work I do as a Counsellor. I am really excited to be bringing this programme to The Quays. Providing this service free of charge for customers allows them to try something they might otherwise have been reluctant to sign up to. Yoga mats will be provided but if you have one you can take your own. Children can also take a toy with them to use as part of the class if they would prefer. I would also like to stress the non-competitive nature of Yoga, this is about creating a fun environment for children to learn a new skill which can help improve their general wellbeing. I would encourage parents to sign up and take their children along to the classes and would hope that from the feedback we will be able to pull together a programme for a number of different groups in the autumn.”
Places are limited for both the 17th and 31st August. To sign up for the 10am class your child must be between 5 years and 8 years and from 9 years to 11 years for the 11am session. All attendees must be accompanied by an adult over 16 during the class and parents/guardians will be asked to sign a consent form. You can sign up by calling into the Customer Services Desk at The Quays or by calling 028 30256000.
