Access to Newry Bus Station could be improved if a proposal to introduce a footbridge to Merchant’s Quay is successful. Council representatives will write to the Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy about the proposal which was aired at the July 3 meeting of the Newry City Linkages Public Realm Scheme Steering Group. Should such a proposals be developed it is likely that local maritime groups such as the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI) and Newry Maritime Association (NMA) would seek assurances that such a bridge would not further restrict the potential for boat movement on the canal. A successful contractor is expected to be appointed in September for the £2.4m Linkages project which will upgrade the canal bank walkways between Dublin Bridge and Sugar Island. The project will also see the appointment of artists for a public art feature. It has also been agreed that a payment of £161k will be made to Braham Electrical from the Newry City Linkages budget for the advanced purchase of street lighting columns for the public realm scheme.
