Further public facelifts

A £1.5m public realm scheme for Newry will focus on the Town Hall and Quays area of the city according to Minister for Social Development Nelson McCausland. Responding to a question from Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley (SDLP) on the amount of funding allocated to town centre regeneration in the Newry and Armagh constituency Minister McCausland said: “My department has allocated funding of £1.6m towards a £1.8m public realm scheme for Monaghan Street and Hill Street Newry which will commence in January 2012. Further public realm works to regenerate the area around the Town Hall and along the Quays with a contribution of £1.5m from DSD are planned for 2012/2013 subject to funding being available and the necessary approvals.” Last week the Reporter revealed that such a project was being considered with an extension to the Hill Street scheme or to start the three quays sections along the canal from Sugar Island to Dublin Bridge among the options.
